Join Bear on a heart-warming journey of self-discovery, autism understanding & acceptance by all 'just as Bear is.'
Delightful illustrations by Leanne Coelho immediately captivate children, adding to the fun!
The message of universal acceptance of all resonates throughout - so empowering for children & adults alike.
Join our neurodiverse Bear, and Bear's friend, Bobbin, who is visually impaired, over the Winter Festival period as they support each other with their sensory needs, and share in the joy and special gifts that their friendship brings.
This story is in memory of my kind friend Amanda Paterson - forever glowing.
We are all unique and different to each other in our own special ways.
Each individual on the autism spectrum experiences their neurodiversity in a way that is special to them.
For Bear, this includes a special interest in dinosaurs, sensory sensitivities, preference for routines, misunderstanding of social situations and at times overwhelming feelings and anxiety.
Celebrate yourself and with Bear!
Sometimes Bear feels happy and joyous, and at other times Bear can feel confused, frustrated, sad or angry.
Opportunities abound to talk about emotions and to consider the feelings of others.
Resources, including this visual support image on emotions, are available to be downloaded for use at home and in educational settings.
Bear is gender-neutral and NO pronouns are used in the story so anyone can relate to Bear.
The colour palette of the story was designed with sensory needs and neurodiversity in mind, so not too bright or busy.
Dino keeps Bear comforted in so many ways.
How many times can you find Bear's much-loved toy, Dino?
Hint: Don't forget to look on the walls too!
Where are Bear's shoes NOW?
How many different places can you find Bear's shoes?
Can you find the clever solution near the end of the story that helps to keep Bear's shoes safe?
We are soooooo excited to share that 'Bear and the Lost Tooth' has been honored as a Finalist in the children's category of 'Mind, Body, Spirit' in the 2024 International Book Awards. In this story, Bear experiences overwhelming feelings of anxiety, and is guided by ThereBear's gentle parenting in understanding loss.
